| “After pursuing graduate studies at Arizona State University in photojournalism, I began working for the Scottsdale Progress newspaper in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1975. From there, I was a freelance photographer for UPI before joining the staff at the Arizona Republic in 1976. Two years later, The Los Angeles Times opened an edition in San Diego, CA. where I became a staff photographer. During the next several years while working at the Times, I began to take on freelance assignments from the NFL, Sport Magazine, Inside Sports, and Sports Illustrated. Since the early 1980s, sports photography became my primary profession, literally “keeping me off the streets!” Most of my time, energy, and experience has been with Sports Illustrated as a contract and staff photographer.” Why am I involved in Sports Shooter Academy? "To give back and to give hope. It’s a very difficult time in our profession. Education is helpful but, inspiration may be more of a necessity. At the Sports Shooters Academy, sharing with students, as well as students sharing their experiences with each other, creates a sense of community and support that is indispensable in today’s world. It means that you can take a chance, a risk, and if you are not successful, you have someone to catch you if you fall." John W. McDonough: Sports Shooter John W. McDonough: Sports Illustrated |
